If you're looking into tutoring for your child, it helps to know that not all math support looks the same. Depending on where your student is and what they need, our work together will look different—and so will our goals.
I think of tutoring in three broad types. They sometimes overlap, but the important part is that we have a clear goal before we begin.
Catching up
Despite the best efforts of parents and teachers, students move through the school system at varying levels and speeds. Through no fault of their own, it's common to be "behind" in skills and concepts that have been standardized by grade level.
Different students struggle with different types of math, too. A student might get easily confused comparing quantities but have excellent visual reasoning for geometric figures—I'm actually describing myself here.
The problem is that unresolved gaps follow students forward. As concepts grow more complex, those earlier gaps compound into bigger frustrations.

Tutoring focused on catching up starts with a diagnostic. I need to identify where the specific gaps are and the level at which a student stopped progressing. I provide my own diagnostic and ask to watch the student work through tasks in front of me—this lets me gather data on their thinking style, their problem-solving approach, and their emotional response to difficulty (which is how I spot math anxiety early).
This kind of support can be deeply rewarding. Because math skills build on each other, filling one early gap often unlocks progress across multiple higher-level skills. The process is about trying different approaches until the student finds one that clicks with how their brain already works. Then: lots of practice.
Keeping up
Some students have the foundational skills but still struggle to keep pace with their class. This is common when core skills were taught through memorization of method without a deeper understanding of why the method works or how to apply it in new contexts.
In my teaching experience, this usually comes down to speed. Math classes move fast, curricula pack an immense amount of content into a single year, and every educator knows that each brain develops at its own pace—but classrooms can't wait.
Tutoring to "keep up" gives a student extra space to slow down and build genuine understanding before moving on. I think of it as a preventative tool—heading off math anxiety before it develops, as a student discovers the limits of what they can do with the attention and time they get in class.

This kind of tutoring is usually a longer-term commitment, with an ongoing conversation about whether the student has outgrown the support. My longest-running student kept our regular sessions for almost five years—I took him from freshman Algebra through Pre-Calculus in his senior year. By the end, he preferred our pacing and my way of presenting information even though he was getting great grades in school.
Test preparation
Like catching-up work, test prep starts with a diagnostic—but here I ask the student to take a full practice version of the target test. I use that to pinpoint specific skills that will improve their overall score.
From there, sessions combine the student's individual needs with the parameters of the test. This often includes tools for managing anxiety—whether math-specific or more general test anxiety—along with test-taking strategies.
Each standardized test is developed by a different company, and each has its own internal logic and style. In sessions, we look closely at how that test phrases familiar math, which traps it repeats, and what kind of answer it rewards.

Test prep sessions run differently than ongoing academic support. They usually require at least an hour, since we need to practice test sections multiple times—and eventually take the full-length test two or three times. The upside: the test itself becomes a concrete, motivating goal. Our preliminary conversations always include what the test is for and what score ranges we're aiming for.
