Families often ask whether their 5th grader should already be "in ISEE prep." The honest answer: some groundwork helps; full test prep usually waits.
Spring of 5th grade
Focus on reading widely, solid arithmetic, and building stamina for longer assignments. That foundation shows up on every section of the ISEE — not just math.
Summer before 6th grade
A light introduction to test format (timing, question types, what QR vs. MA feel like) can reduce first-test anxiety. Heavy drilling usually is not necessary yet.
Fall of 6th grade
Most students I work with start structured prep 3–4 months before their target test dates. That window is enough to build skills without turning every week into practice tests.
Every student is different. If you are unsure where your child falls, book a free consult and we can map a timeline together.
